First Book from Evernight Publishing coming January 9th 2014

passionate-companionsMy first book with Evernight Publishing is coming January 9th, 2014. It’s about a vampire courtesan who isn’t happy about his lot in life.

The day finally arrived when I was to be taken to meet the humans. I slept fitfully and woke early to be groomed for the trip. The master vampires gave orders for all the males making the journey to be bathed in rose water and chamomile, shaved and then dressed in black, thigh length tunics. I’d said my goodbyes to my parents the day before. No tears were shed. I’d never been close to my mother or father because it had been decided at my birth that I would be a courtesan to the humans. I’d been raised mostly by nannies to prevent troublesome bonding.

I was led along the lengthy gangplank to the large shiny air ship that would take me to the meeting place. My heart was beating like a drum in my chest and I felt scared and angry. The trip would be a day in length and at the end of it I would be among a group of ten young males who would be looked over like cows at an auction. I resented the very idea of it. We were all of quality lineage and untouched as requested.

The group of young males I traveled with had a different attitude about all of this than I did. They considered it an honor and were curious about the human men who would take us for their own. They were buzzing with excitement to see who would choose them.

I resented it. I had no desire to be anywhere near a human, let alone fucked by one. Even though I’d known this was what was intended for me, I’d always thought I would change my destiny somehow. When the big metal ship landed we filed out like cattle into a cold, sterile waiting room. I was half-surprised they didn’t have a salt lick or bale of hay for us to amuse ourselves with in the waiting area.

A human woman greeted us once we were all assembled. She was plump and had silver hair, which intrigued me. She must have noticed me staring because she addressed me.

“Are you going to behave yourself, Sully?” she asked sharply.

“How do you know who I am?” I asked.

“I know all of your names.” She looked down at her clipboard. “And the notes here say you can be a real pain in the ass.”

“Why’s your hair silver?” I asked, ignoring her comment and staring at her hair.

“Our hair changes as we age,” she said, running her hand over her curls. “You don’t have to worry about that since you’re a vampire.”

“One of the many advantages to not being human,” I said, lifting my chin.

She narrowed her eyes. “You’re very snooty for someone about to be taken as a human’s sex toy.”

I felt my cheeks warm. “No man will take me without my permission.”

“Just keep telling yourself that, Sully.”

“I didn’t ask to be here and I have no intention of cooperating,” I said.

She grimaced. “Oooh. You’re feisty. Well some of the human men here tonight like the rough stuff, so you’re in luck. But you know it’d be better for you if you took a cue from the other vampires with you. They recognize this is an honor to serve their race. You’re like soldiers serving your country. Or are you a man who only cares about himself?”

“Who else would I care for?” I frowned. “I’ve no attachments to anyone but myself. Isn’t that what was intended from the moment of my birth? So you could whore me out when the time arrived?”

She tapped her foot and studied me for a moment. Then she leaned in and whispered in my ear. “I feel I must warn you, Sully. You are coming off as aggressive and ungrateful for the opportunity that has been given to you. Do you know what happens to the males who are not chosen or who fail to please the human who picks them?”

“They’re returned home disgraced?” I asked pushing my crossed fingers in front of her nose.

“No. None of you will ever return home.” Her lip brushed my ear and her warm breath made me shiver with distaste. “They are executed for having been unworthy. Would that suit you better, Sully?”

I turned my head and met her gaze straight on. “I believe I would find it preferable to being screwed by a human.”
